Disclosed herein is a method for inhibiting the premature polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising adding to said monomers an effective amount of at least one nitroso inhibitor of the structure: Formula (I) wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, nitro, nitroso, halogen, COOR wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl, alkyl, and heteroatom- substituted alkyl; or adjacent groups R1, R2, R3, and R4 can be taken together to form a substituted or unsubstituted fused six-membered ring. Also disclosed is a composition of matter comprising: A) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and B) at least one nitroso compound of the above-described structure.

La présente invention concerne un procédé destiné à inhiber la polymérisation prématurée de monomères éthyléniquement insaturés. Le procédé comprend l'addition auxdits monomères d'une quantité efficace d'au moins un inhibiteur de nitroso de formule (I) dans laquelle R1, R2, R3 et R4 sont indépendamment choisis dans le groupe constitué par un hydrogène, un nitro, un nitroso, un halogène, un COOR où R est un hydrogène ou un alkyle, un alkyle et un alkyle comportant une substitution par un hétéroatome ; ou bien les groupes R1, R2, R3 et R4 adjacents peuvent être réunis pour former un cycle à six chaînons substitué ou non substitué. L'invention concerne également une composition de matière comprenant : A) un monomère éthyléniquement insaturé et B) au moins un composé nitroso présentant la structure décrite ci-dessus.
