A surgical instrument for shaping the distal femur to receive a unicondylar prosthetic component includes a cutting guide body (14) that carries a pair of cylindrically shaped openings (26, 27), each of the openings (26, 27) having a central longitudinal axis (46) and the respective axes forming an acute angle. An annular bushing (28) is removably received in a selected one of the openings (26, 27) during cutting. A bone cutting reamer (36) registers with a central cylindrical opening in the bushing (28). The reamer has an annular shoulder (41) that abuts the top of the bushing (28) to define the depth of the cut. The surgeon sequentially places the bushing (28) and the reamer (36) into one of the selected openings (26, 27). After placing the reamer in the second opening, the surgeon has formed two overlapping circular cuts which form an elongated oval shaped convex surface for receiv- ing the unicondylar prosthesis.
