A shield frame has its upper end pivotly connected tilt pin to one of a plurality of apertures, part of a motor carrying bracket of an outboard motor. The motor has its upper motor portion extending through a lower motor leg to an integral transmission housing carrying a rotating propeller which is driven by the motor and the frame urges against the lower end of the outboard motor, preferably at and on the integral transmission housing when the lower end of the shield strikes a submerged object causing the shield frame to tilt rearward and to carry with it, tilting the outboard motor, transmission housing and propeller out of harm's way.
