ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary alternating current synchronous motor has a stator comprising a cylindrical frame and a pair of opposite poles extending in from the frame. Each of the poles has an arcuate pole face which is divided into two axially spaced parts by an arcuate recess. Each of the pole faces has a plurality of tooth-like projections parallel to the axis. A winding on the stator poles is connected to an A.C. supply. The rotor is likewise divided into axially spaced end portions connected by a reduced intermediate portion on which there is wound a coil connected to a D.C. supply. On each of the end portions there are tooth-like projections parallel to the axis. A capacitor connected in parallel or in series with the stator winding provides a unity power factor.
