An overbased metal detergent having friction-modifying properties comprises colloidal inorganic base particles stably dispersed in an oil of lubricating viscosity. The colloidal particles constitute from 15 to 40 mass % of the detergent, and a stabilising system constitutes from 20 to 45 mass % thereof, the balance being the oil of lubricating viscosity. The stabilising system is the mixture obtained by combining an oil-soluble detergent component and from 25 to 75 mass % of an aliphatic amide having from 10 to 30 carbon atoms.
