Overload protection circuit for a power supply includes an impedance measuring circuit for measuring impedance across an output of the power supply, and a circuit interruption unit for interrupting the power supply if the impedance falls below a predetermined threshold. In various embodiments, the impedance measuring circuit includes a comparator circuit having fed to a first input thereof and having fed to a second input thereof a function of a current flow associated with the power supply such that an output of the comparator changes state when a predetermined function of the impedance across the output of the power supply falls below the threshold. A latching circuit may be used to maintain the protection circuit in an active state regardless of a subsequent rise in impedance across the output of the power supply.
