An overvoltage protective device for a series capacitor (C) has a main spark gap (I) and an auxiliary spark gap (2), arranged adjacent thereto, for ignition of the main spark gap. A second auxiliary spark gap (3) is arranged in association with the first auxiliary spark gap for ignition thereof. The auxiliary spark gaps are connected between one of the electrodes (11) of the main spark gap and a voltage divider which comprises resistors (R1, R2, R3) and a varistor (VR1). When the knee voltage of the varistor is exceeded, the second auxiliary spark gap (3) is ignited, the arc of which initiates ignition of the first auxiliary spark gap (2), the arc of which in turn moves towards and ignites the main spark gap (1). During the arcing time of the spark gap (2), a controlled discharge of the series capacitor through a resistor (R2) takes place.

Lorsque la tension de coude de la varistance est dépassée, le second espace interélectrode auxiliaire (3) est amorcé. L'arc produit par ce second espace interélectrode amorce le premier espace interélectrode auxiliaire (2), dont l'arc se dirige vers l'espace interélectrode principal (1) et amorce ce dernier. Pendant la durée d'arc de l'espace interélectrode (2), une décharge contrôlée s'effectue dans le condensateur monté en série par le biais d'une résistance (R2).
