ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the oxidation of diethylbenzene comprising contacting an unpurified diethylbenzene feedstock with from about 0.01% to about 5.0% by weight of an alkaline earth metal oxide and concurrently and/or in a separate subsequent step contacting the diethylbenzene feedstock with a molecular oxygen- containing gas at a temperature between about 100°C. and 170°C. This process enables oxidation of diethylbenzenes to diethyl- benzene hydroperoxide with a high degree of selectivity without the necessity of prior purification of the diethylbenzene feedstock, for example, by distillation or absorption techniques.
