ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing oxirane compounds by reacting a compound containing olefinic unsaturation with a periodate of the formula MIO4, MH4IO6 or M2H3IO6, or their hydrates, where M is a monovalent metal selected from the group consisting of potassium, sodium, lithium, rubidium, cesium and silver or an ammonium group R4N+ where each R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Operable temperatures, pres- sures and ratio of reactants are, respectively, 100° to 800°C, 1 p.s.i. absolute to 200 p.s.i.g., and a molar ratio of periodate compound to olefin of 1:1 to 1:100. The periodate compound can be either in the solid state or in the form of an aqueous solution. 18,450-F
