Abstract This invention relates to the oxidation or organic substrates and in particular provides a novel reagent of the oxidation, under mild conditions, or primary and secondary alcohols and aldehydes. Specifically, the invention relates to a process for the oxidation of an organic substrate which comprises adding the organic substrate to an aqueous solution containing a catalyst comprising the anion (RuO4)2- in the presence of an oxidising agent.
