422-262A JJ:370 Oxidation of SO2 and H2SO4 Manufacture ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a catalytic contact oxidation process for producing sulfur trioxide from sulfur dioxide. The process comprises passing a gas stream containing sulfur dioxide and oxygen in contact with solid, sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyst at an elevated temperature sufficient to oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide to thereby convert at least a portion of the sulfur dioxide in the gas stream to sulfur trioxide. In accordance with the present invention, the gas stream is passed in contact with the oxidation catalyst at an actual superficial gas velocity of at least about 500 ft./min., preferably about 1500 to 2500 ft./min., and the oxidation catalyst is monolithic and has a plurality of gas passages providing a cross-sectional open area of at least about 50 percent for gas to flow therethrough.
