ABSTRACT A method for preferentially oxidizing sulfide in a viscous, aqueous solution of a hydratable poly- meric material suitable for use in hydraulically treating subterranean formations. The sulfide is oxidized by incorporating hydrogen peroxide and a free radical scavenger into the aqueous solution at a pH between 3 and 10. After oxidation of the sul- fide the stability of hydratable polymers is at least as good as in the original solution.
