A method of protecting a medical instrument and other articles adapted to be inserted into and removed for re-use from a human or animal body is described in which a temporary coating of an oxidation-resistant material is applied to the instrument or part thereof to protect the instrument or part thereof over at least one sterilising or disinfecting cycle. A suitable applicator is also described.
