An oxidation apparatus for cleaning VOC contaminated air by an exothermic reaction includes a pipe system connectible to a source of contaminated air and a combustion chamber having an inlet for this contaminated air and an outlet to atmosphere. A burner is mounted to the combustion chamber and the pipe system is joined to the inlet of the combustion chamber. A tank is provided to remove condensation or water vapour from the contaminated air. The pipe system is connected to this tank so that the contaminated air entering the tank is forced to swirl around the inside of a cylindrical sidewall. The water collects on the sidewall and settles to the tank bottom. Also, an air-to-air heat exchanger can be connected by a first conduit to a source of heated air, this heat exchanger having two inlets and two outlets and two sets of air passageways. The pipe system has two pipe path sections and valves for selecting either pipe path section for use. The second path section conducts the contaminated air to one of the inlets of the heat exchanger so that the contaminated air can be preheated and then conducted from the second air outlet to the combustion chamber.
