ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An agent for the oxidative dyeing of hair based on a gel-like substrate and a dye mixture dissolved therein, wherein the gel-like substrate contains A) 8 to 16 percent by weight oleic acid, B) 8 to 30 percent by weight of nonyl phe- nol oxethylated with 2 to 6 moles of ethylene oxide and/or fat alcohol and containing 12 to 20 carbon atoms oxethylated with 2 to 6 moles of ethylene oxide, C) 6 to 14 percent by weight of fat alcohol containing 10 to 20 carbon atoms, D) 4 to 18 percent by weight of ethanol and/or isopropanol and E) 16 to 70 percent by weight of water. The agents allow the ammonia contained therein to escape more slowly and on adding hydrogen peroxide they dye the hair to a less intense dark shade than the conventional gel-like hair dyes.
