A process for the halogenation of an aromatic compound wherein the aromatic compound is admixed with a halogenating agent in the presence of an ionic liquid is described. The method for the halogenation of aromatic compounds is preferably halide, sulfur or nitrate ionic liquids has significant advantages over conventional halogenation reactions. These are that the reaction starts with e.g. a halide salt rather than e.g. the halogen, and is therefore more convenient and safer. Also , when the reaction is performed in a nitrate ionic liquid, the only by-product is water.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'halogénation d'un composé aromatique dans lequel le composé aromatique est mélangé avec un agent d'halogénation en présence d'un liquide ionique. Ce procédé d'halogénation de composés aromatiques, réalisé de préférence dans des liquides ioniques d'halogénure, de soufre ou de nitrate, présente d'importants avantages par rapport aux réactions d'halogénation classiques. Par exemple, la réaction commence avec un sel d'halogénure au lieu d'un halogène, ce qui est plus approprié et plus sûr. Aussi, la réaction est réalisée dans un liquide ionique de nitrate, et le seul sous-produit est l'eau.
