- 12 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oxide superconductor having a composition of the general formula: A1-.alpha.CuO2?.delta. wherein A is at least one alkaline earthmetal selected from the group consisting of, for example, calcium, strontium and barium, provided that a product of its average ion radius and (1-.alpha.) is in the range from 1.00 .ANG. to 1.32 .ANG., and .alpha. is a number of 0 to 0.2 and .delta. is a number of 0 to 0.2 provided that .alpha. and .delta. are not zero at the same time, which has a structure that CuO2 planes consisting of copper and oxygen atoms stack in the c axis direction and the A ions are present between said CuO2 planes, and has Tc higher than the liquid nitrogen temperature. This super- conductor does not contain an expensive rare earth metal or toxic lead or thallium, but has a superconductive transition temperature higher than liquid nitrogen temperature and does not suffer from denaturalization by water.
