2081318 9214678 PCTABS00015 A noncatalytic process for producing sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid (30) in which sulfur (10) is combusted with an oxygen-rich gas (12) in the presence of recycled sulfur dioxide-rich gas (14) to form sulfur trioxide which is absorbed in sulfuric acid (20) to yield a sulfur dioxide rich gas (24) which is compressed (26) to form the recycled sulfur dioxide gas (14). The sulfuric acid product may be stripped (4) with the oxygen rich stream (12) to recover absorbed sulfur dioxide.
