OXYGEN-CONSUMING COMPOSITION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An effective oxygen-consuming composition for packages, containers, or other closed spaces, especially enclosing an article susceptible to oxidative deterioration, comprises a dithionite for reacting with oxygen, sufficient alkaline material to at least partially neutralize sulfur dioxide released as a by-product of the oxygen consuming reaction, and porous filler particles in sufficient amount to promote contact with the ambient atmosphere, all in homogeneous admixture.
