ABSTRACT An improved flexible graphite fabric gas diffu- sion cathode for an electrolytic cell has a first hyd- rophobic cathode surface contacting electrolyte in the cell and a second cathode surface forming an upper sur- face of the cell. The improvement comprises a plural- ity of perforations in the flexible cathode to provide a series of vents, each perforation having sufficient open area that the force of gravity on the electrolyte is greater than the capillary forces of the perfora- tion on the electrolyte. This prevents a localized nonuniform flow of electrolyte in the cell when the flexible electrode is disposed in a generally horizon- tal position with the first surface contacting the electrolyte and the second surface forming an upper surface of the cell.
