ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oxygen stabilized intermetallic compound having the formula ZrxOVy where x = 0.7 to 2.0 and y - 0.18 to 0.33. The compound is capable of reversibly sorbing hydrogen at temperatures from - 196°C to 450°C at pressures down to 10-6 Torr. The compound is also capable of selectively sorbing hydrogen from gaseous mixtures in the presence of CO and CO2.
