A case-ready package (10) and method of reducing discoloration in meat or poultry products enclosed within such packages when the packages are disposed in a stack of two or more packages. A non-textured and substantially smooth gas-permeable substrate (36) is attached to the lower surface (38) of the packages to allow air to flow into an underlying package in a stack of packages, thereby preventing or minimizing premature discoloration of packaged fresh meat or poultry product due to insufficient oxygen flow into such packages when disposed in a stack. In addition, the substrate may contain printed product indicia either directly or in the form of a label attached thereto.

L'invention concerne un emballage de type barquette (10) et un procédé d'emballage permettant de réduire la décoloration des produits de viande ou de volaille renfermés dans de tels emballages, lorsque ces derniers sont disposés en piles de deux emballages au moins. Un substrat (36) non texturé sensiblement lisse et perméable aux gaz est fixé sur la surface inférieure (38) des emballages de manière à permettre à l'air de pénétrer dans un emballage sous-jacent dans une pile d'emballages, empêchant ou minimisant ainsi toute décoloration prématurée de la viande ou de la volaille fraîche emballée suite à un flux d'oxygène insuffisant à l'intérieur de tels emballages lorsqu'ils sont empilés. En outre, le substrat peut comporter des marques permettant de différentier les produits. Ces marques sont imprimées soit directement sur le produit soit sous la forme d'une étiquette attachée audit produit.
