The invention relates to a trayless close packed array of cans (6) locked together in a heat shrunk sleeve. The packaging machine includes a marshalling station (12) for marshalling the cans in arrays in which there are unequal numbers of cans in each row and a collation station (14) in which the array of cans in rows and columns are collated into close packed formation. A wrapping machine (16) wraps a plastics sleeve around the close packed array and a sealing station (18) seals and heat shrinks the sleeve around the array to lock the array into its formation.

La machine d'emballage comporte un poste d'agencement (12) destiné à agencer les boîtes en séries dans lesquelles chaque rangée compte un nombre de boîtes différent, ainsi qu'un poste de regroupement (14) dans lequel les rangées et les colonnes de la série de boîtes sont regroupées en agencement serré. Une machine à envelopper (16) enveloppe la série de boîtes en agencement serré dans un manchon plastique et un poste de scellage (18) scelle et thermorétrécit le manchon autour de la série de boîtes afin de les bloquer dans cet agencement.
