A method of managing speech items in a communications system having a packet mode group voice communication feature comprises the steps of granting a speech item to one group member of the group communication group, setting a first timer to measure a predetermined idle period in response to the granting, resetting the first timer each time a voice packet is received from the one of the group members and ending the granted speech item if the first timer expires indicating that the predetermined idle period has elapsed from the granting or from last reception of a voice packet from the one group member, wherein the voice packets are real time transport protocol (RTP) based voice packets.
