Merix--Ordered CIP (Canada) Abstract of the Disclosure A packing element for enhancing contact between a fluid having a predominant direction of flow and a second fluid, comprising a plurality of layers, each of which is disposed generally in a plane aligned with the direction of flow. Each layer has a plurality of fluid deflection surfaces which project from the plane and which are oriented to impart to different portions of liquid flowing on one side of the layer different components of momentum at different angles to the direction of flow, and to cause those portions to meet on that side of the layer with a tendency to cancel the momentum components. The deflection surfaces are also arranged to cause portions of liquid flowing on one side of a layer to be transferred to another side of that layer and mixed with fluid flowing on that other side. The layers are also adapted to be disposed adjacent to each other, with some of the deflection surfaces on one layer contacting some of the deflection surfaces on an adjacent layer at a pluraity of nodes. the contacting deflection surfaces being oriented in opposite oblique directions with respect to the direction of flow to cause portions of fluid flowing on the contacting deflection surfaces to meet at the nodes. in one aspects, the deflection surfaces are organized as herringbone corrugations oriented in the predominant direction of flow. In other aspects, each surface has minor protuberances all projecting away from the predominant direction of flow, each protuberance being contoured so that fluid located at any point on the protuberance will tend to flow over the protuberance away from the point; and the protuberances are arranged in a closely packed triangular lattice with the rows of protuberances oriented perpendicularly to the predominant direction of flow.
