W.E. No. 55,097 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a straightforward sensor and method for using the same to verify the existence of and detect a pacman quench, if it exists, in a superconducting coil, magnet or inductor. An active sensor utilizing a transmitter coil, a receiving coil and a detector circuit is used to measure the change in magnetic susceptibility caused by the presence of a large or slow moving pacman quench. A passive sensor utilizing a search coil and a detector circuit is able to measure the change in magnetic flux associated with a change in the current distribution in the superconducting coil when a small or fast moving pacman quench passes by the sensor.
