TITLE: PAD-TYPE IDLER FOR BELT CONVEYORS Note to the attention of the Commissioner of Patents: This application is incomplete. This application is filed under the provisions of the Patent Rule # 93. The sections relating to the Field of Invention; Background of the Invention; Summary of the Invention; Description of the Drawings; Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment; Abstract of the Disclosure; and a number of additional claims will be added at a later date. The enclosed informal sketches will also be replaced by CAD drawings at that time. The pad-type idler according to the present invention comprises a rectangular pad made of a mixture of Teflon TM and carbon graphite. The pad is supported on a metal structural angle. The pad has on its bottom surface, a pair of angled longitudinal grooves that are used to mount the pad to the metal support angle. Each leg of the metal support angle make an angle of 45 degrees with the plane of the pad. The pad further has a plurality of cavities through its bottom surface, some of these cavities are between the longitudinal grooves. The depth of the cavities is slightly more than the depth of the longitudinal grooves, such that upon wear of the pad in use, the cavities are exposed to the belt side of the pad before the longitudinal grooves become exposed. Therefore, upon wear of the pad to the point of exposing the cavities, dust from the conveyor belt surface quickly accumulates inside the support angle. The support angle forms a triangular receptacle extending along the length of the pad and to the side of the pad. The dust accumulating in this receptacle is easily seen 1 or felt by the touch by a maintenance worker walking along the conveyor, to detect a pad which needs replacement. Worn pads can thereby be replaced before the metal support angle protrudes though the longitudinal grooves of the pad and damage the belt of the conveyor. It was also discovered that in some industrial applications, a glaze forms on the surface of the pad to protect the pad against wear. 2
