The present invention concerns the use of a heat shock polypeptide and/or an encoding nucleic acid sequence in the manufacture of a medicament for use in the relief of pain. In particular the invention concerns the use of chaperonin. The invention further provides methods of relieving pain using medicaments containing the heat shock polypeptides.
