Paint formulation comprising at least one long oil alkyd resin and a solvent consisting essentially of one or more linear alkanes having a boiling range from 160 to 250 °C, preferably from 170 to 200 °C, and use of such alkanes in paint formulations. In a preferred embodiment, the solvent contains at least 85% by weight of linear alkanes in the applicable boiling range. Most suitably, the solvent is obtained from a distillate fraction having the indicated boiling range, resulting from a Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon synthesis reaction.
