A pivotable joint for a paint roller extension device has a paint roller mating member for releasable mating engagement with a paint roller handle and an extension device mating member for releasable mating engagement with a paint roller extension device. The paint roller mating member is pivotally mounted on the extension device mating member so as to be pivotable between a first longitudinally aligned position generally longitudinally aligned with the extension device mating member and a second orthogonally aligned position generally orthogonal relative to the extension device mating member. A releasable locking means is provided for releasably locking the paint roller mating member in a generally longitudinally aligned position relative to the extension device mating member. The paint roller mating member further has paint roller mating member first and second stop means for limiting pivotal movement of the paint roller mating member about the extension device mating member, that is, limiting pivotal movement to pivotal movement between the longi- tudinally aligned position and the orthogonally aligned position. The paint roller mating member first and second stop means abut, respectively, corresponding extension device mating member first and second stop means when the paint roller mating member is aligned, respectively, in the longitudinally aligned position and the orthogonally aligned position.
