ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A pair gain interface arrangement for automatically connecting a telephone loop test unit and a pair gain test controller in response to the test unit being accessed by a field technician is inserted between the test unit and pair gain test controller. The interface scheme comprises a processor-based line monitoring mechanism coupled in circuit with the line circuit joining the test unit to the pair gain test controller. The line monitoring mechanism monitors the line circuit for voltage levels generated by the test unit when accessed by a field technician, controls the interconnection of the test unit and the controller in accordance with the monitored voltage levels and returns status information to the field technician over the test access trunk in the form of audio (DTMF) signals. Once the pair gain test controller has completed the pair gain substitution, line circuit continuity between the direct access test unit and the pair gain test controller is maintained for a period of time sufficient for the test unit to conduct channel test. At the same time audio tone signals representative of test sequence status and subscriber circuit type are transmitted to the craftsperson.
