PALATABILITY OF DOG FOOD INCREASED BY SELECTIVE TREATMENT OF MEAT MEAL ABSTRACT The object of the present invention is to provide an improved process for preparing a dog food having improved acceptability. It is also an object to provide a product improved by that process. It has been difficult to obtain the advantages of high corn contents in dog foods due to a negative effect corn has upon palatability. According to the present invention, at least a major portion of the corn is withheld from processing while the other components of the dog food are subjected to heating in the presence of moisture prior to extruder expan- sion. It has been surprisingly found that minimiz- ing the treatment of the corn and treating at least some of the farinaceous and proteinaceous ingre- dients by heat and moisture improves the overall palatability of the dog food.
