A catalyst precursor is provided that is useful in the selective hydrogenation of olefinic unsaturation in polymers or copolymers. The precursor comprises a palladium salt that is complexed with a complexing agent selected from the group consisting of organic phosphates, dialkylidene acetones, and tetra-alkyl ammonium hydroxides. The catalyst precursor may be used in batch, step-wise addition or continuous systems.
