The present invention provides mammalian pancreatic progenitor cells ("small cells") and methods for their isolation and propagation. The pancreatic small cells are derived from adult pancreatic tissue and are characterised by their small size. The small cells are quiescent or undergo a very slow cell cycle when maintained in cell culture. Small cells secrete synaptophysin and islet hormones and are predominantly found in small, growing islets as small clusters. The present invention further provides for the use of the pancreatic small cells in transplantation and the treatment of diabetes mellitus, and for the genetic engineering of the small cells in order to produce recombinant proteins in vivo.

La présente invention concerne des cellules progénitrices pancréatiques mammaliennes (<= petites cellules >=) et des procédés permettant de les isoler et de les propager. Les petites cellules pancréatiques sont dérivées d'un tissu pancréatique adulte et elles sont caractérisées par leur petite taille. Ces petites cellules sont quiescentes ou elles subissent un cycle cellulaire très lent lorsqu'elles sont maintenues en culture cellulaire. Les petites cellules sécrètent la synaptophysine et l'insuline et elles se trouvent essentiellement dans les petits îlots de Langerhans en croissance, en petits amas. L'invention se rapporte en outre à l'utilisation des petites cellules pancréatiques dans la transplantation et le traitement du diabète sucré, et dans la recombinaison génétique des petites cellules destinée à la production de protéines recombinées in vivo.
