-17- A method and apparatus for end cutting overlay material such as foil or paper which has been adhesively overlaid in a continuous strip on the upper surfaces of forward and rearward panels as the panels move along a conveyor defining a longitudinal processing path. The leading edge of the rearward panel is butted against the trailing edge of the forward panel, as the panels move along the conveyor. Arrival of the panels' butted edges at a selected point along the processing path is detected, whereupon a knife is drawn transversely across the processing path, slitting the overlay material along the panels' butted edges. The knife is mounted on a carriage which moves along the processing path together with the moving panels, as the knife slits the overlay material. Before the knife slits the overlay material, a stop is projected upwardly through the processing path against the underside of the forward panel to elevate the forward panel with respect to the rearward panel, as the panels continue to move along the processing path and as the forward panel moves over the stop. This allows the leading edge of the rear- ward panel to contact the stop, which coincides with the aforementioned selected point. The stop is mounted on the carriage in alignment with the knife. The carriage is longitudinally moved along the processing path by the moving panels after the leading edge of the rearward panel contacts the stop. After the knife slits the overlay material, the forward panel is removed from the conveyor as a finished overlaid panel. The rearward panel then takes the place of the forward panel; a fresh rear- ward panel is placed on the conveyor, and the aforementioned process- ing is sequentially repeated.
