A hanger primarily designed to hold pants, skirts, ties or scarves, embodies one or more vertical arms attached to a horizontal bar. Each vertical arm houses a solid or hollow retaining cylinder or ring, which rolls up and down between the walls of the vertical arm. One wall of the vertical arm has a channel. As a clothing article is inserted upward between the walls of the vertical arm, the article pushes the retaining cylinder up, causing it to roll along the channel and out of the way of the clothing article. When the article is released, it allows the retaining cylinder to roll back down and grip the clothing article between the surface of the retaining cylinder and the flat (non-channelled) wall of the vertical arm.
