Disclosed herein is a paper coating agent which comprises a modified polyvinyl alcohol (A) containing 3 to 15 mol% of ethylene units and an alkali metal ion (B), with the ratio of component (A) to component (B) being 100:0.003 to 100:1 in parts by weight. Disclosed also herein is a heat-sensitive recording material which comprises a coating layer on a substrate, said coating layer comprising a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 3 to 15 mol% of ethylene units. The paper coating agent of the present invention has such excellent solubility in boiling water that there is not a problem of insoluble matter in an aqueous solution of the coating agent. When applied for a paper surface coating agent, it gives coated paper without discoloration, superior, in surface strength, air barrier properties, and printability. When applied for a paper pigmented coating agent, it gives coated paper without discoloration, superior in water resistance and printability. The heat-sensitive recording material of the present invention is superior in color developing sensitivity, water resistance, oil resistance, plasticizer resistance, and PVC film resistance. Furthermore it is superior in high-speed printability and image resolution, and it can be used in the field, such as facsimile, where high-speed printing is required.
On divulgue un agent de couchage du papier qui comprend un poly(alcool vinylique) modifié (A) contenant 3 à 15 %, en pourcentage molaire, d'unités éthylène et un ion de métal alcalin (B), le rapport du constituant (A) au constituant (B) étant de 100:0,003 à 100:1 en parties en poids. On divulgue également un matériau d'enregistrement thermosensible qui comprend une couche d'agent de couchage sur un substrat, ladite couche comprenant un poly(alcool vinylique) modifié contenant 3 à 15 %, en pourcentage molaire, d'unités éthylène. L'agent de couchage du papier de la présente invention possède une telle solubilité dans l'eau bouillante qu'il n'y a pas de problème de matière insoluble dans une solution aqueuse de l'agent de couchage. Appliqué comme agent de couchage pour la surface du papier, il donne un papier couché sans décoloration, supérieur pour ce qui est de la résistance de la surface, des propriétés d'étanchéité à l'air et de l'aptitude à l'impression. Appliqué comme agent de couchage pigmenté pour papier, il donne un papier couché sans décoloration, supérieur pour ce qui est de la résistance à l'eau et de l'aptitude à l'impression. Le matériau d'enregistrement thermosensible de la présente invention est supérieur pour ce qui est de la sensibilité chromatique, de la résistance à l'eau, de la résistance à l'huile, de la résistance aux plastifiants et de la résistance au film de PVC. De plus, il est supérieur pour ce qui est de l'aptitude à l'impression à haute vitesse et de la résolution d'image, et il peut être utilisé sur le terrain, p. ex. les télécopieurs, qui exigent une impression à grande vitesse.
