ABSTRACT A paper coating composition comprising an aqueous plastic dispersion prepared from 15 to 85% by weight of a C8 to C12 monovinyl aromatic compound, 14 to 84% by weight of a plasti- cising component selected from the group consisting of C4 to C6 acyclic, conjugated diolefines and C4 to C6 alkyl (meth)acrylates, 0.5 to 10% by weight of a C3 to C6 .alpha.,.beta.-monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 0.25 to 15% of .alpha.-methyleneglutaronitrile as binder. The last monomer is essential in that it replaces acrylo- nitrile, usually used in this kind of coating compositions, which is acknowledged to be a hazardous material. Papers coated with the coating composition according to the invention show a good wet pick resistance and good colour uptake resulting in an improved printability.
