A hand tool for slabbing a roll of paper, comprising an elongated carriage frame having handle means affixed thereto. The hand tool also has casters mounted on each side of the carriage frame for movably supporting the frame along an upper segment of that roll. There is also provided a blade carrier attached to the elongated frame and a cutting blade mounted in that blade carrier. During use, the cutting blade extends beneath the elongated frame, with a cutting edge thereof facing towards a forward end of the frame. The elongated frame may also comprise a pivotally lockable blade guard enclosing the cutting blade when the hand tool is lifted off a work surface, forfurther enhancing a safe handling of the tool. In accordance to a further aspectof the present invention, there is provided a method for slabbing a roll of paper comprising the step of pushing a cutting blade through several plies of paper in a direction along the axis of the roll, while holding the blade at a lateral inclination relative to a path of cutting of that blade of between about 10° and about 30° measured from a radius of the roll.
Outil manuel pour le dégrossissement d'un rouleau de papier, comportant un châssis porteur allongé comprenant des moyens de prise fixés à ce dernier. L'outil à main comporte aussi des galets montés de chaque côté du châssis du porteur afin de supporter le châssis d'une manière permettant sa mobilité le long d'un segment supérieur de ce rouleau de papier. On retrouve également un support de lame attaché au châssis allongé ainsi qu'une lame de coupe montée dans ce support de lame. Durant l'utilisation, la lame de coupe se prolonge en dessous du châssis allongé, le bord tranchant de la lame faisant face à l'extrémité avant du châssis. Le châssis allongé peut également comprendre un protecteur de lame pivotant, verrouillable, enfermant la lame de coupe lorsque l'outil à main est élevé vers une surface de travail, pour relever davantage la sécurité de la manutention de l'outil. Selon un autre aspect de la présente invention, il existe une méthode de dégrossissement de rouleau de papier comprenant une étape qui consiste à pousser une lame de coupe à travers plusieurs épaisseurs de papier dans une direction le long de l'axe du rouleau pendant que la lame est maintenue avec un angle latéral compris entre environ 10 degrés et 30 degrés par rapport à un chemin de coupe de cette lame, angle mesuré à partir du rayon du rouleau.
