A single layer forming fabric comprising a primary warp and a paired primary and secondary weft yarn system, which is woven according to a four, five or six-shed pattern. The secondary weft yarns are of the same size as the primary weft. Within each pair each primary weft floats over at least as many warps as it passes under, and each secondary weft passes under one or two warps. Both the primary and the secondary weft pass under at least one warp in a side-by-side relationship. This single layer weave construction serves to reduce the machine direction frame length, and contributes additional yarn material that is available to resist abrasive wear during use, so as to increase fabric wear life. The shorter frame length provides better fibre support, improved first pass retention, and improved sheet release from the forming fabric.
