In a personal transportation unit designed for paraplegics, this invention is a three wheeled mountain bike for people who still retain upper body strength and dexterity and wish to have greater mobility and independence than conventional units (wheelchairs) allow. In this invention, power is derived by hand cranks that are secured to the outside of crankshafts (left and right) and then connected from front sprockets to rear sprockets by chain. By hand cranking with either the left or right hand, or both simultaneously (electric motors which are not shown may be added to greatly enhance the range and speed on this invention) and a lower first gear ratio due to oversized sprockets of the rear sprockets, paraplegic riders can afford easier starts and climbs on the bike. Safety wheels on the rear of the bike, located behind the rear wheels and connected by wheel stays to the frame prevent the bike from flipping over backwards when applying the brakes. Front brake levers are on opposite ends of the handlebars (left hand for left brake and right hand for right brake). Rear brake levers on the rear hand grips are to stabilize the bike for easier entries and exits. A front-end support spring system which helps to keep the front wheel straight, with adjustable tension and shock absorbers (not shown) provides smoother riding. The seat is a full-bottom or sling (not shown) to accommodate everyone's needs. The seat belt is a wider support belt (nylon and Velcro) with a quick release and Velcro strap for double security. Foot straps on pedals are to secure the feet while operating the bike. Derailer levers are on opposite sides of the handlebars. There are two per side: one for the front derailer and another for the rear derailer. The right hand controls the left-hand side derailers and the left hand controls the right-hand side derailers. The frame is constructed from medium grade metals that weld together easily. Metals like aluminum and titanium alloys will make for lighter and stronger frames.
