"PARA-XYLENE ADSORPTIVE SEPARATION WITH INDAN OR INDAN DERIVATIVES AS HEAVY DESORBENT" ABSTRACT P-xylene is separated from a mixture of same with at least one other xylene isomer by contacting in an adsorption step the mixture with a Ba or Ba + K exchanged X zeolite adsorbent at adsorption conditions effective to selectively adsorb p-xylene and to produce a raffinate stream enriched in the other isomer relative to feed and thereafter an extract stream enriched in p-xylene relative to feed is recovered in a desorption step by contacting the resulting p-xylene richadsorbent with a desorbent containing indan or an alkyl-substituted indan at desorbent conditions effective to produce the extract stream. Any contaminating C9 aromatic hydrocarbons present in the mixture can be separated from these indan desorbents and the other xylene isomers by fractionation of the raffinate stream and the desorbent can then be recycled to the process.
