In a conventional internal combustion engine the cylinder within which the piston moves is more or less cylindrical throughout its length, the top of the cylinder being designed to house the intake and exhaust values and the spark plug. In this invention the top of the cylinder, in which the combustion is first ignited, is shaped as a paraboloid of revolution. A parabola is a conic section of eccentricity 1. In Cartesian coordinates a parabola can be represented by the equation: y2=4ax If a parabola is rotated around its axis, the resulting surface is called a paraboloid of revolution. The reflective mirror in an automobile headlight for example, is a paraboloid of revolution. As such it exploits the focusing property of the parabola. In the headlight, the bulb which radiates the light, is placed at the focus of the paraboloid of revolution. A ray of light starting at the focus, hits the surface of the mirror and is reflected along a line parallel to the axis. In this invention, the same principle is exploited to focus the explosive energy of the combustion along lines parallel to the motion of the piston. In this fashion, the piston and cylinder more efficiently convert the energy of combustion into mechanical energy.
