ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A parachute has a zip fastener securing together normally spaced parts of the canopy to provide a canopy reduced in size by the elimination of a reefed section intermediate the parts and a release means for releasing clamping plates securing one end of the zip after initial parachute development to allow the reefed section to inflate. The parachute may be conventional; a single skin gliding parachute having one or more wing sections wholly or in part reefed; or a multicellular double-skin ram-air inflated gliding parachute with some of the central cells reefed.
