It is found out that when a hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) receptor binds to a novel mucin-like protein, the expression of the function of the HGF/HGF receptor is regulated and thus the HGF-dependent cell proliferation and tissue and vessel regeneration/neogenesis are inhibited. It is further found out that various diseases including liver diseases can be treated by inhibiting the binding of the HGF receptor to the mucin-like protein.
