The present invention includes a method for treating a patient in need of facilitated oxygen delivery through the lungs, additional lung surfactant, removal of material from inside the lung, or inflation of collapsed portions of the lung, comprising the step of introducing into the lung of the patient an effective therapeutic amount of a fluorocarbon liquid, the amount not exceeding the functional residual capacity of the lung of the patient upon exhalation taking into account any positive and expiratory pressure applied to the patient's lung. The method may also comprise the additional step of providing an oxygen-containing breathing gas to the patient while the fluorocarbon liquid is in the lung.

Cette invention concerne un procédé permettant de soigner un patient nécessitant un apport d'oxygène facilité dans les poumons, un tensio-actif pulmonaire supplémentaire, l'élimination des matières situées dans le poumon, ou la dilatation des parties collabées du poumon, comprenant une étape dans laquelle on introduit dans le poumon du patient une quantité efficace au niveau thérapeutique d'un liquide de fluorocarbone, cette quantité ne dépassant pas la capacité résiduelle fonctionnelle du poumon du patient lors de l'expiration en prenant en considération toute pression positive et expiratoire s'exerçant sur le poumon du patient. Ce procédé peut également comprendre une étape supplémentaire dans laquelle on fournit au patient un gaz respirable contenant de l'oxygène pendant que le liquide de fluorocarbone se trouve dans le poumon du patient.
