PARTIAL OXIDATION OF HYDROCARBON GASES D#78,306-F Abstract Process for the partial oxidation of a stream of hydrocarbon gas in admixture with an aqueous dispersion of recycled carbon soot and with or without admixture with a hydrocarbon- and/or hydrogen-containing recycle gas stream in a free-flow partial-oxidation synthesis- gas generator to produce a stream of raw syngas, reducing gas, or fuel gas. The process conditions are such that about 0.1 to 3.0 wt. % of the total carbon content in the combined feed is collected as unreacted free-carbon soot and all of the carbon is recycled. The O/C atomic ratio is in the range of about 0.75 to 1.15; the Specific Oxygen Consumption is in the range of about 212 to 235; the dwell time in the reaction zone is about 2.5 to 10 seconds; and the temperature in the reaction zone is in the range of about 1700°F. to 2400°F. By the subject process, the Cold Gas Efficiency is increased. The Cold Gas Efficiency may be further increased by designing the volume of the reaction zone greater than the conventional volume by an increase sufficient to provide resi- dence time such that residual methane in the effluent syngas is reduced to the minimum achievable at the lower than conventional feed O/C atomic ratio.
