Coated monofilament dental floss have a biofilm- responsive particulate abrasive overcoatng. The particulate abrasive coating comprises from between about 2 and about 45 percent by weight of the floss has a Incidental Release Factor (1 >) of at least about 85 percent by weight; and a Perceived Abrasive Factor IPAF) of at least between about 1.5 and about 4Ø Also disclosed is a method for removing, disrupting and controlling biofilms using overcoated monofilament dental tape containing saliva soluble base coatings, wherein said base coating and particulate abrasive overcoating are released during flossing A method of making dental floss and for overcoating coated monofilament dental floss are also disclosed.
