ABSTRACT A patient support appliance is provided having a base which includes an obstruction free surface onto which a plurality of elongated contiguous inflatable air sacs are mounted. The air sacs which are arranged in groups lengthwise of the appliance extend traversely thereof to provide a supporting surface for supporting a person thereon. A blower which provides pressurized air to the sacs is included and supported from the base or from a support frame for the base. A main air supply conduit provides a path for feeding the pressurized air from the blower to a distribution chamber. From the distribution chamber, the air is channeled to the groups of sacs via a plurality of air supply conduits. A pressure regulating means is included and regulates the pressure of air supplied to the groups of sacs from the distribution chamnber. Also, a means associated with the chamber for causing the air to be expelled from the appliance is provided to allow the air sacs to be deflated rapidly.
