ABSTRACT A pattern recognizing system has an input pattern parser for parsing an input pattern to output a candidate graph in which segmenting points in the input pattern are used as nodes. Categories corresponding to segments defined by the segmenting points are used as respective branches between the segmenting points. Costs are assigned to the branches. A candidate graph memory stores data for the candidate graph. A minimum cost calculator calcul- ates, for all the nodes of the candidate graph, the minimums of the costs of all paths from the nodes to terminal nodes to assign the minimums, as the minimum costs c(n) to the terminal, to the nodes. A midway path memory stores data of the midway paths from the start node to arbitrary midway nodes. An estimation calculator calculates an estimation factor f(p,h) for an arbitrary midway path based on the costs assigned to the branches of the paths and the minimum costs assigned to the end node of said midway path. A best path selector selects the best midway path at an arbitrary instant during recogni- tion from all the midway paths, that are stored in the midway path memory, in accordance with the estimation factor evaluated by the estimation calcula- tor. A validity judging circuit parses the midway path selected to judge whether or not a category starting corresponding to the midway path forms at least a part of a valid one as a recognition result and to output the midway path or the category string as the recognition result when the category string is valid and when the midway path reached the terminal end of the candidate graph.
